Energy Web, a non-profit organization that develops open-source software for clean energy solutions, has launched Green Proofs for Bitcoin (GP4BTC), a certification initiative for the Bitcoin mining industry. The purpose of GP4BTC is to establish an independent and standardized energy measurement system that provides transparency into the decarbonization efforts of Bitcoin miners and hosting companies.

The certification platform and registry assess Bitcoin miners based on their clean energy use and contributions to grid stability through demand response. The initiative aims to deliver verifiable metrics that are consistent across companies and geographies, providing recognition and reputational benefits for companies that mine sustainably. It also aims to improve access to institutional finance and other returns on investments in sustainability practices.

GP4BTC has been launched with the participation of five certified miners, including Argo Blockchain, Cowa, DMG Blockchain Solutions, Hive Blockchain Technologies, and Gryphon Digital Mining. These miners are assessed based on their clean energy score and grid impact score, which takes into account factors such as location, energy consumption, procurement of renewable electricity, and siting operations in regions with low grid carbon intensity.

The GP4BTC initiative was developed in partnership with over 35 miners, NGOs, grid operators, and other energy and crypto market participants. It is aligned with best practices for sustainability leadership in other industries and corporate ESG reporting approaches in the financial sector.

This certification initiative is significant for the Bitcoin mining industry, as it provides a standardized framework for measuring and verifying miners’ sustainability practices. It also allows miners to provide evidence of their clean energy practices and offers a one-stop-shop for discovering and validating miners’ sustainability credentials for Bitcoin users and institutions.

The goal of GP4BTC is to create a virtuous cycle where clean mining practices are easier to define, pursue, and monetize, ultimately becoming the industry’s standard. Energy Web is actively seeking to collaborate with Bitcoin miners and other parties interested in adopting GP4BTC.
